EVENT

SCIENTIST
DOES

Each investigation begins with a ‘scientist’ doing something - a demonstration or video. The teacher plays the part of the ‘scientist’ and students are encouraged to closely observe the steps the scientist takes and the changes that occur. This sets the stage for further exploration and piques student curiosity.

    • Preparation:
Start with one of the Observe Infer poster options. Re-label the organizer: Observe to EVENT and Infer to SCIENTIST DOES. (3-in1 and 2-in-1 posters are labelled this way) Use unique sticky note colours to denote the difference.

    • Set your demo up so that the results fall in the mid-range.
This leaves room for students to explore extremes - ie. do better than the teacher did.

    • Demonstrate a scientific procedure or experiment. Model the steps involved and highlight important observations.
For example, In a lesson about the properties of air, a teacher may demonstrate how to create a vacuum using a syringe and a marshmallow

    • Make deliberate and obvious actions without telling students what to do (non-prescriptive).

    • Draw attention to safe practices as needed.

    • Record observations using two colours of sticky notes. Use one colour for what the SCIENTIST DOES and another colour for the EVENT how objects behave.

    • Ask for and receive clarification regarding the procedure.
