This foldable one page graphic organizer is used to guide the process of separating observations from inferences and challenging bias and preconceptions. This page is folded so that Observe and Infer are initially visible and the Squid is hidden. Students make observations and inferences before pulling the foldable open to reveal the SQUID diagram. Students proceed by placing one inference in the head of the squid and populating the tentacles with supporting observations. The process is then repeated to explore other possible inference / observations connections.
Making INERENCES from OBSERVATIONS builds UNDERSTAND. Or, it is only through UNDERSTANDING that it is possible to develop INFERENCES from OBSERVATIONS.
